Vatican Necropolis

Though sometimes overshadowed by the beauty of the Vatican Museums and the size of St. Peter’s Basilica, in Vatican City many treasures are also hidden underground. Below the Basilica, between 5 and 12 metres, lies the magnificent Vatican Necropolis, a network of underground graves and mausoleums that were once an open-air Roman cemetery placed next to Nero’s circus – dates the coexistence of pagan and Christian tombs. In this extraordinary underground world you will even find the resting place of St. Peter the Apostle. Visits to the Necropolis is capped at about 250 people per day.
