Waikiki’s first hotel gets major refresh ahead of milestone

Waikiki’s iconic Moana Surfrider, is embarking on a remarkable renewal in celebration of its 125th anniversary.Known as the “First Lady of Waikiki,” the Westin resort’s renovation will be completed in phases through 2025 and 2026, enhancing its legacy while preserving its storied charm.“As Hawaii’s most iconic hotel, the Moana Surfrider’s renovation is a tribute to its celebrated past and bright future,” General Manager of Moana Surfrider Thomas Foti said.“Our goal is to preserve the resort’s historic legacy, while enhancing the guest experience with modern comforts and thoughtful design.”The renovation includes a comprehensive refresh of the resort’s 791 guest rooms and suites across three wings.The Tower Wing will be completed in late summer 2025, offering luxurious accommodation with sweeping ocean and Diamond Head views, highlighting a modern beach luxury design.The Banyan Wing, which dates back to 1901, will embrace its classic elegance with a design inspired by the healing properties of seaweed. Meanwhile, the Diamond Wing will celebrate Waikiki’s surf culture with vibrant, beach loft-inspired interiors,. Both will be unveiled in winter 2025.In addition, the resort’s historic lobby will receive a refresh, staying true to its colonial-style Victorian architecture. A new oceanfront event space, set to open in the latter half of 2025, will offer an ideal venue for special occasions, with capacity for up to 200 guests.The redesign, led by Lisa-Maria Priester and Bev Tagami of WCIT, incorporates elements inspired by the natural beauty of Waikiki and its historical significance. “We wove in design elements to promote a rejuvenating guest experience that specifically tie back to the natural elements,” Priester said.The renovation will be fully complete just in time for the Moana Surfrider’s 125th anniversary on 11 March 2026.
