A significant milestone in the construction of Viking‘s latest ocean vessel, the Viking Mira was reached last week as the ship was officially “floated out” at the Fincantieri shipyard in Ancona, Italy.
The float out ceremony, which marks the first time a new ship touches water, took place on 31 July. The ship is set to debut in spring 2026 and will spend her inaugural season offering itineraries in both the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.
The the newest addition to Viking’s fleet of small ocean ships, Viking Mira shares the signature features of its sister ships: a gross tonnage of 54,300 tons, 499 staterooms, and capacity for 998 guests.

“In our view, together with Fincantieri we have created the world’s most elegant fleet of small ocean ships – and the float out of the Viking Mira marks yet another important milestone as we continue to grow our fleet,” said Torstein Hagen, Chairman and CEO of Viking. “As we prepare to welcome her in 2026, we are proud to offer even more opportunities for curious travellers to explore the world in Viking comfort.”
The float out ceremony is a longstanding maritime tradition and marks the transition of a ship from dry dock construction to the final stages of outfitting. During the event, a ceremonial cord was cut, allowing water to flow into the building dock and set the Viking Mira afloat.
This two-day process will be followed by the ship’s relocation to an outfitting dock for interior build-out and final preparations.
