Turkish Airlines has introduced a new carbon emissions offset program, enabling passengers to contribute to environmental and communal initiatives.Passengers aiming to offset the emission of their TK flight can do so by contributing to a project of their choice, purchasing an emission reduction certification accredited by United Nations.Dubbed ‘Co2mission’, the project offers multiple carbon offset programs to support across three verticals: Renewables, Community Care and Greener World. Those options span solar, hydroelectric and wind power; reforestation and improved kitchen regimes for communities in Anseba district in Eritrea.
The passenger contributions support the projects, which have been accredited by VCS and Gold Standard and can submit their third-party evaluation and reviews without any cuts by Turkish Airlines.Commenting on the launch of the voluntary Co2mission, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Bolat, Turkish Airlines Chairman of the Board and Executive Committee said: “We are continuing to take the initiative to combat climate change, which stands at the forefront of today’s global problems.”Flight data information along with arrival-departure stations are enough to take part in the carbon offset process. Guests are able to complete their carbon offset process whenever they want, regardless of which airline they travelled with. With the THY Co2mission platform, it is possible to calculate the carbon offset amount with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) methodology, which considers route length, aircraft type, fuel consumption and numerous other factors.The platform is accessed via Turkish Airlines’ website homepage, during ticket purchases, or directly through the Co2mission website; turkishairlines.co2mission.com/.
