When it comes to exploring the wild frontier of Alaska, HX Expeditions takes your clients further, deeper, and closer. HX has set a new benchmark in small-ship, sustainable expedition cruising – offering unique access to Alaska’s remote beauty, rich cultures, and abundant wildlife aboard the world’s first hybrid-powered cruise ship, the MS Roald Amundsen.

Best time to travel to Alaska: Seasonal Highlights

Timing matters in Alaska, and HX helps travellers make the most of every season:
  • Whale Watching: While orcas are often spotted year-round, peak whale season runs from June to early September. Gray Whales begin arriving in late April, while Humpbacks and Minke Whales are best seen in July and August, especially when hundreds gather in the Inside Passage.
  • Bird Nesting: For shorebird migrations, late April to mid-May is ideal. Songbirds arrive from early May and breed through early June. Coastal winter months are perfect for spotting eiders, Long-tailed Ducks, and Whiskered Auklets.
  • Bear Viewing: The best chance to see bears hunting salmon is from mid-July to late September, especially at dawn and dusk along rivers and coastlines.
  • Mild Weather: July is typically the warmest month, with average highs around 19°C. June through August offers comfortable conditions, but Alaska’s weather can change rapidly—so layers are essential.

Go Beyond the Ordinary

HX offers 10 to 20-day itineraries sailing northbound and southbound between Vancouver and Anchorage, venturing through the Inside Passage, Aleutian Islands and the Bering Sea. These routes allow for visits to places few others reach, including Matthew and St. Paul Islands and the culturally rich communities of the Aleut, Alutiiq and Tlingit peoples.Where most ships pass by, HX lands. Clients can kayak through iceberg-strewn fjords, hike secluded forest trails, or step ashore in remote fishing villages rich in Gold Rush history.

Wildlife Encounters Like No Other

Alaska is a wildlife haven, and HX ensures your clients experience it up close. From spotting salmon-hunting bears on land to watching pods of humpback and orca whales from an expedition boat, every moment is designed to bring guests closer to nature. Birdwatchers, too, will be in paradise with bald eagles, trumpeter swans and hummingbirds all calling Alaska home.A Ship Designed for Exploration and SustainabilityPurpose-built for polar and remote waters, the MS Roald Amundsen combines green technology with expedition-ready capability. It carries up to 500 guests, allowing for a more personalised and immersive experience. Thanks to its smaller size and no need for port infrastructure, the ship can visit off-the-grid destinations and lesser-seen communities – without overwhelming them.

Deeper Learning with the Expedition Team

Every sailing includes HX’s renowned Expedition Team of scientists, historians and activity experts who deliver onboard lectures, lead shore landings, and run the interactive Science & Education program. These experts help guests uncover the layers of Alaska’s unique environment and cultures, adding meaning to every experience.
