The team from Visit Seattle put on a great event on Thursday 7 December, which, much like the city itself, was understated but delivered in a big way. The venue was PS40, a hot ticket in Sydney by anyone’s standard, serving up two of its signature cocktails; a deliciously refreshing whisky and citrus-based number meant that the sweeter-looking fruit-based number wasn’t personally sampled. For those not looking for cocktails there was local chardonnay and sauvignon blanc on offer to wash down the Sydney rock oysters, spanner crab, house-made mushroom rice paper rolls and deconstructed prosciutto BLTs.The message of the night was clear: Seattle is an underutilised gem. Delivered in friendly conversations by the Visit Seattle team, with a brief welcome from Tom Norwalk, Visit Seattle CEO, it was an informative and well presented evening.A stepping stone to cruise Alaska or join a Rocky Mountaineer train journey, Washington state’s largest city has a lot more to offer than just being a stopover. Cultural and artistic pockets, enviable live music, a strong foodie scene, the Needle, large investment in industry (this is the home of Amazon), and outdoor activities provided by surrounding mountains and waterways in winter or summer make it a veritable gold mine of experiences. The reception was the final event in a whirlwind tour by the Visit Seattle team that has seen them visit Auckland, Brisbane and Sydney in the space of five days. They are excited about their partnership and representation through GTI Tourism as of this year and look forward to welcoming many more Australians to their city. My overall impression of the evening was that if the city is as friendly and charming as its representatives, I want to go! On Wednesday night they held a more formal reception at Bennelong Restaurant with American Consulate staff and dignitaries. Photos supplied are from that event.Words: David Newling, Signature Media
